About Us About the Company Durham Eagle LLC is comprised of three divisions. Durham Eagle Press publishes quality textbooks written by the owner in his areas of expertise as well as by other authors. Its mission is to publish quality textbooks at prices that are affordable to both students and professionals. Durham Eagle Numismatics offers educational materials in the form of articles written by the owner as well coins which are available for purchase. Durham Eagle Chemistry offers educational materials in chemistry. This division of the company will be expanded to develop both internally and in conjunction with associates pharmacologically active agents that have been synthesized by the owner and his collaborators. About the Owner Durham Eagle LLC is owned and operated by Dr. Robert A. (Bob) Izydore. He is a Professor of Chemistry at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). The company name is derived from the city in North Carolina where the owner resides and from the owner's varying associations with the concept of eagles. Bob is an avid golfer and a collector and student of U.S. coins. Overall he has collected many more coins with eagles than eagles in golf. Additionally the nickname of NCCU is the Eagles. An early interest in science and mathematics led to a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Penn State. This was followed by a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry from Duquesne University and postdoctoral research appointment at Duke University after which Bob joined the Department of Chemistry at NCCU. He has taught B.S. and graduate level courses in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. His teaching specialties have been organic chemistry and spectroscopic methods of analysis with an emphasis on NMR spectroscopy. It is the opportunity to do research that makes academic life exciting. Research activities have been carried out in organic/medicinal chemistry. New organic chemistry reactions, reaction mechanisms, and the synthesis of pharmacologically active compounds have been investigated. Novel compounds having hypolipidemic, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activity have been synthesized. A patent on one of the classes of compounds was licensed to a Japanese company in 1998. Bob began collecting U.S. coins at the age of eleven when he was given a Liberty Seated quarter and an Indian Head cent by a retired family barber. He collected ardently for several years but put his collecting on hold while he pursued his education and career. In 1980 the collecting bug returned. Bob has been a dedicated numismatist since. His main area of specialization is early silver type coins with an emphasis on Liberty Seated coins, particularly quarters and Gobrecht dollars. He has made numismatic presentations, exhibits, and publications based on his study, observations, and research. Life offers many choices. One can concentrate on just a few areas of interest or choose to experience a wider range of activities. Bob has chosen the latter course. In addition to his intellectual interests, he has enjoyed physical pursuits. Considerable time has been devoted to golf, jogging, aerobics, handball, and dancing. Golf has been the most challenging. Dancing has been the most fun. The latter has included swing, ballroom, free style, and contra dancing. Bob recently ended a five-year tenure on a swing dance team where he was involved in giving performances and competing. He is currently a member of a waltz performance team. |
